10 Great Restaurants of Zihuatanejo

There are SO MANY restaurants, that this was not easy to do. I love food and all kinds of food. That being said, I was once like you reading through websites trying to figure out where we were going to eat in Zihua. What I was always left wondering is, “Who is this person? Do they eat what I eat? Can I trust them?”. I take eating seriously, it’s a highlight of every trip.

What kind of foodies are we? We are adventurous eaters but my adventure ends with any indication of a dirty kitchen and anything to do with brains, feet, or tongues. We are patient (relatively), the scene above took some time to prepare and we gladly waited for it.  Plenty of our meals are not eaten on fine china but some are. I’m a big fan of great service.

  1. Coconuts- This is a treat. The seafood and steak is wonderful. Order the Mexican 2014-01-29 19.15.07.jpgCoffee or a flambe for dessert and watch the show (the pic above). Sometimes the best things in life are worth the wait. The waiters are wonderful and you get your very own fire show with your dessert. It was our 6 year olds favorite too! www.coconutszihua.com
  2. La Bella Vita- I know what you are thinking Italian in Mexico? I’ve been to Italy and it’s good Italian.  Great pastas, pizzas and great service.
  3. Il Mare- The food is good, the service and scenery in the evening is exceptional.
  4.  El Mangler, Playa La Ropa- Cross the bridge and take a look at the alligators, then order some great food. Great lunch and dinner.
  5. Paty’s MariMar, Playa La Ropa- Everyone loves Paty’s for breakfast. I love it for dinner because you can eat with your toes in the sand. It looks very different at night.http://www.patys-marymar.com/
  6. El  Murmollo- You can order Mexican, Italian, or wait for it, Thai? I know, but trust me the food is good. It’s a little hidden treasure on a pedestrian only street, downtown . It has decent wine, great music, and my husband ordered Thai as I rolled my eyes and took a bite.It was good. (We were there for a month and started having some cravings.)
  7. La Sirena Gorda- Several of the expats insisted that the best fish taco was here. Fish tacos are an obsession of mine, then I saw lobster tacos. OH MY! The sauce on the lobster was amazing.
  8.  Chez Leo- Great tuna and tacos!
  9. Linda Vista- This place as a great history (it was a big  celebrity hideout at one time) and still has great service. We ordered the enchiladas with Tojo sauce. It was delicious.
  10. Villa de las Selva- Okay, technically this not in Zihua instead Ixtapa but it’s worth the taxi ride. It is beautiful with a view to match.  It’s fine dining, we had friends join us and we ordered steak, shrimp, and fish and everything was delicious. Plus, the Coati mundi come hang out in the trees and say hello! Villa De La Selva

You cannot go to Mexico without trying a margarita. During our month,we tried a few and the award for the #1 Margarita Award goes to the Viceroy at Playa La Ropa. Before heading out to one of these wonderful places, stop by between 5-6p, it’s 2 for 1 and enjoy the Tamarind Margarita!

Bon appetit!

Dining Advice: Ask for your check. In Mexico, it is considered bad manners to just bring the check (some will but most won’t). I’ve seen many Americans get extremely upset because it’s taking so long, you have to ask for it. And then, you will still wait a little longer because you are on Mexico time, you are also on vacation…RELAX! You have earned it.
